This tall order requires an immense amount of documentation. The team relies on Smartenance for the safest and most efficient maintenance process. Volker Neumüller, employee in the area of maintenance processes, has recognized the advantages of digitalized maintenance and has pushed the use in the plant. Production managers can now define the tasks more easily and quickly and prepare them more comprehensibly for the employees using pictures, videos or specific data sheets.
At our plant in Rohrbach, Germany, the mobile digital maintenance manager is used to maintain a system with 17 robots, among other things. The "Digital Logbook" makes Smartenance the knowledge and communication platform in your maintenance team.
Since November 2019, several thousand different cylinder variants in many sizes and with different strokes have been produced on it - from round cylinders DSNU and compact cylinders ADN to standard cylinders DSBC, DSBF and DNC. The average production time per cylinder is 25 seconds.
"In order to test Smartenance on a broad scale, we have defined pilot plants ranging from simple assembly workstations to complex production systems and assembly lines. We were enthusiastic from the very beginning. In the meantime, 106 users maintain and service 160 systems in Rohrbach and Wiebelskirchen. Festo has broken new ground in the development of Smartenance.
Jost Litzen from the Digital Strategy and Business Model department at Festo was right in the middle of the action right from the start. In this interview, he talks about the origins of Smartenance and why it is open to future developments in Industry 4.0.
"I got 20 years experience in automation. Maintenance and Total Productive Maintenance have always been important topics in this field. At the same time, however, they have also been problems because they were planned analogously. You had to run after the tasks and sometimes they were not implemented. Often there was no traceability and when the person in charge was on holiday, things became even more complicated. It was always difficult to implement the planned maintenance of systems with the necessary regularity. That's why we have developed an Excel-based solution over the last five years and have continuously improved it. This has also worked quite well.
However, when maintaining this table, I was dependent on the feedback from the maintenance staff. So I had to run after the tasks again. Since the introduction of Smartenance, the tasks come to me or to the employees who work here. I, as production manager, have a precise overview of who did or did not do what and when. The maintenance staff can see directly when which task has to be completed. They can also give me direct feedback. This allows me to react flexibly, for example if a shorter or longer interval is recommended. It is really fun to work with the tool.
Our feedback on Smartenance is taken very seriously, flows directly into the software development to the colleagues and is implemented as quickly as possible".
Smartenance not only makes it easier for plant operators to maintain their systems. Since all collected data is centrally documented and managed, production managers are also kept up to date on the maintenance status of the systems. No matter from which perspective you look at Smartenance: From that of the production manager or the plant operator, the advantages of digitalized maintenance management are obvious.
